How to Do a Tin Toss

Hi, I’m Chris Cardone. I’m the Northeast United States representative of the Flair Bartenders’ Association. And I’m going to teach you how to do a tin toss.

Now you can do a flat toss, which doesn’t really provide any excitement or anything at the bar, it’s kind of just, you know, tossing your tin around. So you want add a little rotation to kind of create the gleam and the lighting of the tin and make it look a little more difficult. The simple rule of the tin toss is just to simply hold the tin basically with your thumb and your two forefingers, and you’re just going to kind of let it rotate in your fingers like this. Then what you’re going to do is you’re going to simply release into the air and on its own, it’s going to rotate. Now the amount of rotation depends on how hard you snap your wrist and also the height in which you throw it. So you can snap your wrist very softly and throw it really high to get a slow rotation, or you can snap your wrist really hard and really tight to make a quick rotation. And that’s up to you of how you want to do this.

Now the thing about tossing a tin also is whether you want to do one or two rotations in the toss. So you can either throw it for one rotation, or snap a little harder and give yourself a second rotation. But the key is to hold the top of the tin. If you hold the bottom of the tin, there’s really no way to toss it. So you want to hold the top of the tin, not on top, but actually on the top level of the tin, and then kind of like, just snap your wrist and let it fly. And again, it depends on what you’re doing and why you’re doing it, whether you want to do one or two rotations, but it’s very simple. Wrist snap, throw it in the air, and catch it. And that’s a tin toss.
