How to Do Behind the Back Exchange Move

Hi, I’m Chris Cardone. I’m the Eastern United States representative of Flair Bartenders association, and I’m gonna to teach you how to do a behind the back exchange.

This is much more advanced move of Flair bar tending. It’s a concept of taking an item, whatever it is, whether it be two bottles, two tins, in this case a bottle and a tin, and exchanging them from one hand to another but behind your back. So, the concept is, we’re gonna start with the first move, which is just taking a bottle and dropping it behind your back.

The second move is taking a tin and throwing it from behind your back and catching it in your other hand. Then when you put the moves together, you’re going to do an exchange. Like that. Now, the concept behind, how not to have them meet in the air is to take the first item and throw it up. At the apex, or the height of the move as it starts to comes back down, that’s when you release your second item to come through a path so that they don’t hit each other.

So what we’re going to do is throw our bottle in the air, and at the apex, we’re going to throw our tin the other direction and let them pass through each other or exchange from hand to hand. Now, beginners, this is a disclaimer warning, I have a broken bone in my right eyebrow from practicing this move with two bottles, and when I threw the second bottle, they were lucky enough to connect right about here, and one came flying back and smacked me in the eyebrow. So be careful when you’re doing this, and continue to practice the two moves separately.

Start with the first move of just dropping the bottle behind your back. Take the tin and practice this, and then slowly work your way up into a nice tin exchange, and that is how to do a behind the back tin exchange.
